Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common questions about our made-to-measure steel doors, external systems, and FD30 fire-rated options.
Internal Steel Doors
Slim-profile steel framed glass doors designed to divide spaces while keeping light flowing.
What are internal steel doors?
Internal steel doors from Steel Doors Online are slim-profile steel framed glass doors designed to divide spaces while maintaining openness and natural light flow.
They are an ideal alternative to solid walls or traditional timber doors, helping create bright, modern interiors while still separating rooms effectively.
Where can internal steel doors be used?
They suit most indoor spaces, including:
- Living rooms, kitchens, home offices
- Hallways, staircases, bedrooms and en-suites
- Open-plan layouts and commercial interiors
What configurations do you offer?
Made-to-measure options include single and double hinged doors, fixed screens, sliding, pocket sliding, and doors with side panels/partitions.
Do internal steel doors improve light flow?
Yes — steel framed glass allows daylight to pass between rooms, reducing dark areas while still creating separation.
Can I choose privacy glass?
Yes — choose clear, reeded, or frosted/opaque glass depending on the level of privacy you need.
Are sliding or pocket doors good for smaller spaces?
Yes — sliding reduces swing clearance, and pocket doors slide into the wall cavity, making them ideal for compact layouts.
What colours and handle options are available?
We can manufacture in any RAL colour (black is most common), plus white and bronze finishes. Hardware options include mortice latch handles, trim handles and pull handles (and pocket handles for pocket systems).
External Steel Doors
Architectural steel systems designed for slim sightlines, strength and thermal performance.
What makes steel external doors different from aluminium or composite?
Steel allows much slimmer profiles than most aluminium systems while remaining exceptionally strong — creating a high-end architectural look with larger glass areas.
Which steel systems do you supply?
We supply systems including Jansen Janisol Arte 2.0, Jansen W50TB and Ottostumm profiles (W50TB/W75TB), with system selection based on performance and design requirements.
Are external steel doors thermally efficient?
Yes — thermally broken steel profiles reduce heat transfer, and we pair them with modern insulating glazing. Triple glazing can be specified where required.
What glazing do you supply as standard?
Standard spec is 24mm double glazing (toughened glass with an Argon cavity). Upgrades are available depending on the system and performance needs.
Do steel external doors rust?
No — external systems use protected steel profiles and durable coatings designed for exterior environments. Routine cleaning and basic maintenance support long service life.
Fire Rated Steel Doors
FD30 / E30 options with certified hardware and guidance around UK compliance.
What are fire rated steel doors?
Fire rated steel doors are engineered to slow the spread of fire/heat (and in some cases smoke) to help form protected escape routes and compartments.
What fire ratings are available?
Depending on system selection, options include E30/FD30, E60 and higher ratings on selected systems.
Do fire rated steel doors still include glass?
Yes — specialist fire-resistant glazing is used to maintain integrity under high temperatures, while still allowing light and visibility.
Why are some fire rated steel doors thicker?
Certified fire performance requires additional internal protection and tested construction methods, which can mean wider or reinforced profiles depending on the system.
Do I need building inspector approval for FD30?
Yes — the required rating depends on your building type and layout. Your architect/building control should confirm what’s required before ordering.
What hardware is included with fire rated doors?
Certified fire doors must use approved components (locks, handles and closers) as part of the tested specification. Using non-certified hardware can invalidate performance.
General FAQs
Lead times, delivery, measurements, drawings and warranty.
Are all steel doors made to measure?
Yes — every door is manufactured to your opening size and specification, so accurate measurements are essential before production begins.
What is the manufacturing lead time?
Average manufacturing lead time is around 8 weeks, depending on specification (including bespoke colours and fire-rated systems).
Do you deliver across the UK?
Yes — delivery is available across the UK mainland, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (remote locations confirmed at quotation).
Do you provide drawings before manufacturing?
Yes — we provide approval drawings so you can confirm sizes, layouts and specifications. Production begins only after approval.
What warranty do your steel doors include?
All doors include a 10-year warranty covering frames, hardware and glass for long-term peace of mind.
Can bespoke doors be returned or changed after production starts?
No — because every door is bespoke, orders can’t be changed once manufacturing begins, and bespoke products are non-returnable.
