Why Steel Doors Are Essential?

Fire doors divide buildings into protected compartments that slow the spread of fire and smoke. This controlled separation allows occupants time to evacuate safely and reduces structural damage during an emergency.

Steel fire doors are widely specified because steel maintains stability under extreme heat. When combined with certified fire resistant glazing and expanding sealing systems, the entire doorset forms a reliable barrier against flames and hot gases.

In homes, steel fire doors are commonly required between kitchens, garages and protected escape routes. In commercial buildings they are essential within corridors, staircases and shared access areas. Builders and contractors rely on properly certified doors to satisfy inspection requirements, while architects favour glazed steel systems because they maintain openness and natural light.

Each project carries different compliance requirements. Our technical team reviews drawings and advises on suitable fire ratings and system sizes before manufacture begins, helping customers avoid specification errors.

Fire Protection Components

FIRE PROTECTION COMPONENTS

Intumescent Fire Seals

A critical yet hidden component within fire doors is the sealing system.

Graphite based intumescent seals such as PROMASEAL®-LFC expand at approximately 190°C and can increase up to twenty times their original size. This expansion seals gaps between door leaf and frame, preventing smoke and flames from passing through during a fire.

This hidden component plays a major role in achieving certified fire resistance performance.

FAQs

What is a steel fire door and how is it different from a standard steel door?

A steel fire door is a tested doorset designed to resist fire and smoke for a specific period of time. Unlike a standard steel door, a fire rated steel door is manufactured using certified frames, fire resistant glass, intumescent seals and approved hardware that work together as one system.

Our doors are built using recognised European systems such as Jansen and Ottostumm profiles combined with certified fire glass. This ensures the door performs correctly during a fire rather than simply looking similar to a steel door.

Which fire rating do I need, FD30, FD60 or FD120?

The correct fire rating depends on building layout and local building control requirements. FD30 doors are commonly used in houses and smaller commercial spaces. FD60 or higher ratings are often required in larger buildings, shared access areas or commercial developments.

If you are unsure, our team can review your drawings and advise which fire rated steel door system is suitable before manufacture begins.

Are your steel fire doors fully certified?

Yes. We supply systems based on independently tested components and assessed assemblies. Depending on the option selected, certification may apply to the glazing only or to the complete doorset including frame, glass and hardware.

Our Jansen and Ottostumm systems are designed to meet recognised fire testing standards, helping contractors and architects satisfy inspection requirements.

What is the difference between glass-only fire doors and fully certified fire doors?

Glass-only systems use certified fire resistant glazing within a standard steel frame. These are often suitable for residential projects where approved by building control.

Fully certified doorsets, such as our Jansen and Ottostumm systems, include a fire rated frame and tested accessories. These are typically required for commercial buildings or projects with stricter compliance requirements.

We explain both options clearly during quotation so customers can make an informed decision.

Can steel fire doors include large glazed panels?

Yes. Modern glazed steel fire doors allow significant amounts of glass while maintaining fire performance. Systems such as the Ottostumm W40 slim profile can accommodate large glazed openings with tested single leaf sizes up to approximately 1480 mm wide by 2500 mm high.

This makes them ideal for open plan interiors where light flow is important.

What fire resistant glass do you use?

We use certified fire resistant glazing including Pyroguard and Pyroswiss systems. These glasses are tested for integrity and, in some configurations, radiation control.

Options include laminated and insulated glass units as well as decorative finishes such as frosted or etched glass while remaining within certification limits.

How do steel fire doors stop smoke spreading?

Steel fire doors contain intumescent seals fitted within the frame or door leaf. These seals expand when exposed to heat, typically activating at around 190°C. As they expand, they close gaps around the door, preventing smoke and flames from passing through.

This hidden component plays a major role in achieving fire resistance performance.

Are your steel fire doors made to measure?

Yes. All doors are manufactured to order. Sizes, glazing layouts, colours and configurations are tailored to each project. Approval drawings are provided before manufacturing so dimensions can be checked by homeowners, builders or architects.

Can you supply steel fire doors for both residential and commercial projects?

Absolutely. Our range is designed to cover everything from single doors in homes through to large glazed partitions and commercial installations. Entry level systems suit residential upgrades, while fully certified Jansen and Ottostumm systems are widely used in offices, hospitality and multi occupancy buildings.

Do you provide installation or supply only?

We primarily offer supply across the UK, with installation available in selected areas. Doors are delivered fully assembled where possible to simplify installation for contractors.

How long does manufacturing take?

Typical lead time is approximately 8 to 10 weeks depending on specification, size and finish selection. Approval drawings are issued before production begins to ensure accuracy.

Will your fire doors pass building control inspection?

Our systems are based on recognised tested assemblies and certified components. While final approval always rests with building control authorities, we provide supporting technical information and guidance to help projects meet compliance requirements.

How much do steel fire doors cost?

Pricing depends on system choice, size and configuration. Entry level solutions begin from around £2,150 including VAT, while premium slim profile architectural systems start from approximately £4,300.

A tailored quotation ensures the correct system is specified for your project rather than overpaying for unnecessary certification.

Can architects and contractors request technical advice before ordering?

Yes. Many architects and builders contact us during the design stage. We can review drawings, discuss fire ratings and recommend suitable systems to avoid specification issues later in the project.

What happens after I request a quote?

After receiving your enquiry, our team reviews the project details and may request drawings or measurements. We then recommend a suitable system, provide pricing and issue approval drawings before manufacture begins.
